Get a Kit in the Mail

Receive a collection kit in the mail.

_{Note: If you are only looking to dispose of electronics, batteries and/or lamps, you will not receive a kit in the mail.}

On Your Pick-Up Date

Place the unwanted materials at a designated location before 7 a.m. on your collection date.

_{Note: You do not need to be present for the collection.}

Where to place your items outside your home.

Location. Place your materials on the ground near your front door, garage, or another accessible area of your yard. Items must be visible from the street and clear of snow or ice. If your driveway is longer than 100 feet, steep, or near a busy road, please place materials within 25 feet of the street for easier collection.
Avoid incorrect placement. To prevent accidental pickup, do not place materials next to your regular trash or recycling bins and avoid placing them in alleyways.
Access. Our team cannot enter your home or garage. If you have a fence, please leave the gate open for access.
Gated community. Please provide your gate code ahead of your collection appointment.
Pets. For everyone’s safety, please ensure all pets are secured.
Timing. Place all items out before 7:00 a.m. on your scheduled collection day.

How to pack the containment bag (for collections with chemicals).

Once you have started filling your bag, do not move it. Dragging your bag can cause damage. If your bag is damaged, WM may not be able to collect your bag.
Check each container carefully. Make sure every container is clearly labeled. If a label is missing or hard to read, please relabel it. If you’re unsure what a substance is, do not guess. All containers must be securely sealed—leaking containers may not be collected.
Place all labeled items into the bag, taking care not to overfill it. If your items don’t fit, please contact us—we may provide an additional bag or schedule a second appointment.
Seal the top of the bag securely using the provided plastic tie. If the bag becomes filled with rain or the items are wet, it may not be collected.
Do not pour liquids directly into the bag. All liquids must remain in their original sealed containers or be transferred to sturdy, non-glass containers with secure screw-top lids.
Do not mix materials within the same container, as this can create dangerous reactions.

Some items require specific packaging.

Batteries

Applicable Batteries

AA, AAA, C, D, 9-volt sizes
Small and round button sizes
Batteries in mobile phones & similar devices

Safe Packing

Lithium and Rechargeable batteries:

Completely tape both ends of each battery with clear tape so the type remains visible. Optionally place each battery in a separate sealable plastic bag.
Place taped or individually bagged batteries into a larger, sealable plastic bag.

Alkaline, Carbon Zinc, & small Non-Lithium batteries:

Do not tape. Place all into one small sealable plastic bag.

Unmarked Containers

If a label has worn off, you must identify and label what's inside. Items that are not clearly labeled will not be collected. Do not guess what’s inside the unmarked container if you are uncertain. Please contact your city or municipality for safe disposal options of unknown items.

Your options:

Place a label on the item (included in the kit), or
Write the material name on the container with a permanent marker. e.g., "LATEX PAINT"

Medical Sharps*

Place syringes/needles/lancets in a rigid, puncture-resistant, sealed container.
Write "needles/sharps" on the outside with a permanent marker.

Do not throw loose sharps directly into the plastic containment bag.

Do not include batteries or medicines in these containers.

Acceptable containers include:

Red medical waste containers
Juice/laundry detergent/soda bottles or similar rigid, sealed containers

*Sharps not accepted in PA or NY.
